Communication and Public Relations Officer | Skip Sponheim


Skip Sponheim is the SE Division Communication and Public Relations Officer. In this position, he is responsible for enhancing communications between Departments and the SE Division to facilitate the passing of information, and for the publication of newsworthy items from the Departments for inclusion on the SE Division website and other news carriers. He is also Paymaster for the Department of Florida, and lives in Spring Hill, Florida.

Skip enlisted in the Marines in 1967 and moved up through the ranks to become an NCO as a Court Reporter prior to being nominated for OCS. After graduation from OCS, he became an artillery Officer and was posted to Viet Nam where he served as a Forward Observer with M 3/5. His final rank at discharge was Captain. He attended schools in his home town of Tampa, Florida at the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida.

Skip joined the Marine Corps League on the fourth of July, 2006, and has held many positions Detachment 708 where he is a life member, and in positions with his Dual Membership Detachment 1002 and the Department of Florida . He is very active with the Devil Dogs having served as Pound Keeper in Pound 058, and currently serving as Pound Keeper in Pound 230. Skip proudly holds the title of Pedigree Devil Dog. He also serves as an officer with the Pack of Florida.

Skip has received numerous awards in his various duties while with the Marine Corps League, including Marine of the Year with Detachment 1002 and Devil Dog of the Year with Pound 230. Other awards include a Distinguished Citizen Award (Silver and Bronze) and well as multiple other awards.

In his civilian roles, he created and owned numerous businesses prior to retiring from public life. He also served as President of his Home Owners Association and was Medical Director for the Community Emergency Response Teams in his home county.

Skip and his wife Jean live in Spring Hill, Florida and she is also very active in the Auxiliary at the local, state and national levels. Skip is also a life member in both the VFW and Disabled American Veteran organizations.
