Cal Walters is the Assistant Division Vice Commandant, Southeast Division and the Jr. Past Commandant of the
P.L. Wilson Detachment of the Marine Corps League in Mobile, Alabama.
Although he was born in Pascagoula, MS, Cal considers himself a native of Mobile, Alabama having grown up there
and graduating from Murphy High School in 1989. Cal enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1991 while attending Yale
University in New Haven, CT where he was a Political Science major. He was a member of the 3rd Force Reconnaissance
Company in Mobile until he was honorably discharged in 1996.
Cal first joined the P.L. Wilson Detachment in April of 1995 and served as Sergeant-at-Arms, Chaplain,
and Judge Advocate before moving to Maryland due to his wife’s change of duty station. He transferred his
membership to the Baltimore Detachment, where he served as the Legislative Officer under the League’s current
National Executive Director Mike Blum. In 2005, Cal and his wife returned to Mobile, and he transferred his
membership back to the P.L. Wilson Detachment upon arrival. He is now a Life Member of the Detachment and an
officer of Bulldog Pound #184 of the Military Order of the Devil Dogs as well as the Alabama Pack of the MODD.
From 2006 to 2008, Cal served as Jr. Vice Commandant of the Detachment, and from 2008 to 2009, served as its Commandant.
Cal served as the Department of Alabama Judge Advocate from 2008 to 2009 and currently serves as the Department
Junior Vice Commandant.
Cal serves as the Chair of the National Scholarship Committee and is a member of the National Newsletter and the
Vision and Strategy 2025 Committees. In February 2010, he was appointed as Assistance Division Vice Commandant,
Southeast Division by National Commandant Jim Laskey.
Cal is a member of American Legion Post #88 in Mobile, where he has served on the Post Executive Board, as well
as the South Alabama Veterans Council. He is active in supporting the veteran’s community throughout the local area,
including the Biloxi VA facility and the Green Veterans Home. He is also a project coordinator for Operation
Never Forget.
Cal has received numerous awards for his service in the Marine Corps League, including the Marine of the Year Award
for the P.L. Wilson Detachment in 2007 and the Department of Alabama in 2008. In March of 2009, Cal received the
prestigious Carter Award as the 2008 Marine of the Year for the Southeast Division of the Marine Corps League.
He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Citizen Award (Bronze and Silver) from the League for his service and
dedication to the veteran’s community.
Cal and his wife, the former Kathryn Fortenberry, have been married for fourteen years. They have three children,
Megan, Bridey, and Hannah and reside in Mobile, Alabama.
